Medicare in Colorado 2026

What Colorado residents and retirees should know before making Medicare decisions.

Biggest thing to know Choosing the right Medigap plan the first time matters more in Colorado than it does in some other states. Colorado does not have a Medigap Birthday Rule. If you want to change Medicare Supplement plans later, you may have to answer health questions unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right.

Birthday Rule No
MedigapColorado follows the standard federal Medigap rules and does not have a Medigap Birthday Rule. After your initial enrollment period or a guaranteed issue event, changing Medicare Supplement plans may require medical underwriting, making your initial plan selection especially important.
Part DColorado follows the standard federal Medicare rules for both Medigap and Part D, with a few important state-specific considerations. For prescription drug coverage, Part D follows federal Medicare rules. Colorado beneficiaries can choose from multiple stand-alone Part D plans, and benefits, formularies, pharmacy networks, and premiums vary by plan. Beginning in 2026, Medicare Part D includes a $2,100 annual out-of-pocket prescription drug spending cap and the option to spread prescription costs throughout the year using the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. Because drug coverage and provider networks change annually, reviewing your Part D coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7) is recommended.

Why Colorado Is Different

Colorado Medicare beneficiaries can choose between Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan. Unlike California, Colorado does not have a Medigap Birthday Rule, so changing Medicare Supplement plans after your initial enrollment may require medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right. Medicare Advantage plan availability and provider networks vary by county, making it important to compare plans based on where you live and receive care. If you're moving to or from Colorado, review your coverage before relocating to avoid unexpected changes.

Most Common Mistake

Assuming mountain communities have the same Medicare options as Denver metro areas.

Medigap Rules

Colorado follows the standard federal Medigap rules and does not have a Medigap Birthday Rule. After your initial enrollment period or a guaranteed issue event, changing Medicare Supplement plans may require medical underwriting, making your initial plan selection especially important.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are widely available across Colorado, with the greatest selection typically found in the Denver metropolitan area and other larger communities. Plan availability, provider networks, and costs vary by county, so it's important to compare your local options each year before enrolling or making changes.

Part D Prescription Coverage

Colorado follows the standard federal Medicare rules for both Medigap and Part D, with a few important state-specific considerations.

Provider Network Notes

Provider access varies significantly between urban and rural communities.

Moving To or From Colorado

Review provider access and network coverage before relocating.

Snowbird Considerations

Colorado is generally a good home state for snowbirds who have Original Medicare because you can receive care anywhere in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. If you have a Medigap plan, your coverage also travels nationwide with Original Medicare. However, if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, routine care is typically limited to your plan's network and service area, although emergency and urgent care are covered nationwide. If you spend several months each year in another state, verify that your doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies are available before choosing a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

Long-Term Care

Health First Colorado may assist qualifying residents with long-term care services.

Retirement Tax Notes

Colorado generally offers moderate retirement taxation.
